To assess the limit of bearing capacity on foundation is one of the most important problem in geotechnics engineering. So far it has three ways梚n site experiment, theoretical analysis and reference to the code of bearing pressure. But each of them has its advantages and disadvantages, such as big cost or low-degree accuracy. So how to solve this problem accurately and economically is being the aim of geotechnics engineering. In this article it takes the foundation as a slope of 0 degree. Finite element stress-strain analysis method and slope stability analysis method are employed to assess the stability and to determine the limit of bearing capacity of a foundation. Based on the finite element stress-strain analysis, the factor of safety along the potential sliding surface is defined as the ratio of strength to shear stress along the whole surface. The limit of bearing capacity is determined by adjusting the applied load until the factor of safety reaches 1. The results of the numerical examples in this article are satisfactory.
