Calcu1ating stress in design criterion of concrete gravity damis based on method of mechanics of materia1s. As to high dam, thecriterion informs that numerical analysis shou1d be so1ved by FEA,but there is not quantitative criterion. While using FEA to so1vestress of gravity dam, the stress in the most of dam is a1most assame as true stress, but 1n the heel ot gravity dam , the stressobtained by FEA is different from true stress, the resu1t isdeformed. It is necessary for us to work out the stress contro1criterion, Basing on the results of formers, through detai l mesh andtransforming the geometrica1 type of dam and modulus ratio of damfoundation and the body of dam, at the same time through mu1titudeca1cu1ation, I conc1ude the experimental formula about width ofdiagonal tension region in the heel of gravity dam and stress controlcriterion, and analysis the dot coefficient of safety basing onusing FEA to stabi1ity of against sliding of gravity dam.
