Soil Embankment is widely used in water conservancy and flood prevention projects because of its being able to drawing on local resources and other advantages. How to analyze and calculate the seepage and stabilities of levees under high level flood reasonably, and supply reliable technological support for dangers removing and strengthening are of great engineering significances. As for actual embankments, the hydraulic head, cross section shapes, properties of filled soil, geological conditions, structure and property of soil layers, terrain and so on all vary greatly, it抯 hard to define precisely the distribution of seepage field and take effective seepage prevention measures. So the setup of various kinds of seepage differential equations as well as their solving terms, and methods in common use to analyze and calculate the seepage and stabilities are discussed in this paper. With typical conditions simplified and summarized from above factors, a model test of permeability in homogeneous embankment is performed in the laboratory. During the test, more emphasis are put on the change of stress and pore water pressure and their mutual influences in the body under two water level, from which universal rules of the levee body under steady flow are achieved. At the same time, other conditions, such as rapid drawdown and upraise, alternately changing water level and dynamic water, are also studied for further research of unsteady seepage. Furthermore, as stresses in the stress field influence the value of seepage coefficient k, which will results in the change of seepage field in the end, while on the other hand, the seepage field also has an effect on the stress field because of seepage forces. Based on the coupling model of seepage field and stress field, a program by finite element method is developed in this paper. And the comparison of results of the program and criterion method with that of test shows that the test results are reasonable, which can be referred to analyze the causes of dangers, evaluate degree of safety of the body and foundation, and design and optimize the measures of seepage control.
