Dam-like embankment is a new and comprehension type of project, and is practical important and necessary to be developed. Unfortunately, the research on its design theory can not meet the requirements put forward in the practical engineering. So it抯 very important for practical engineering to carry out the research work. Based on the analysis of social and environmental benefit of dam-like embankment, the cost of this type embankment and the cost of a bridge structure are compared and analyzed. Further, a series of design thoughts, design principle and design methods is put out. Among this design series, the method of settlement calculation and consolidation process are studied as an emphasis. A computational program is carried out for one-dimensional consolidation. The final settlement and the consolidation settlement are calculated using the program developed with the soil parameters of a certain bess high embankment of a high-grade highway. Then the calculation results are agreeable with the monitored data of this section. The above result shows that the proposed method are applicable to calculate and predict the final settlement and the settlement of the embankment of a specific time. The paper provides a feasible method for the settlement calculation of dam-like embankinents and high-grade highway, and obtains the experiences for selecting parameters of regional bess. At the end of the thesis, measures for construction quality control and project quality guarantee are put forward. In a word, the paper established a series of method for dam-like embankment design, construction monitoring, and quality guarantee, and the series can be referenced in dam-like embankment design.
