This paper focuses on the high speed fiber databus technology according to two major programs, namely Airborne Real-time Fault-tolerance Distributed Computer System and Airborne High Speed Databus Technology. High speed databus technology is the working house and core of the next- generation avionics, and will play a key role in realizing avionics system integration, improving fighter抯 performance and survivability. At the beginning, the paper reviews the history and current state of the development of avionics system and airborne databus. It states that the next- generation airborne databus must support large bandwidth capabilities, optics fibre as transmission media, distributed control mechanism and powerful fault tolerance performance. Then, the paper not only discusses the main databus technologies in the past two decades, but also compares two of the promising databus which are being considered for the next-generation avionics: linear token passing bus (LTPB)and FDDI token passing ring. With the comparison research of the both databus in many aspects and detailed analysis of the FDDI protocol, the paper draws a definite conclusion that beyond bandwidth, latency and flexibility, some of FDDI抯 salient characteristics making it well suited to avionics applications. Based on this, FDDI is clearly the emerging databus technology of choice for the next- generation avionics. The design and implementation of the intelligent FDDI adapter is focuses on. Firstly, the specification of FDDI is analyzed in detail. Then, it describes the adapter抯 scheme and its circuits and software. Finally, the paper discusses strategies adopted to optimize FDDI performance from the view of the airborne environment. The detailed testing of the FDDI communication system shows the research of high speed fibre databus is reasonable and reaches the expected requirements.
