In this paper, the author constructed a single-cell reinforced concrete box girder in a scale of one to five according to actual engineering. Based on the model test, the author presents parametric analysis and theoretical research on transverse internal force and its effective distribution width. Furthermore, empirical formulations are developed. During the model test, one span simply-supported and two span continuously-supported cases are considered. A detailed record of the model is made when it is loaded in various transverse position. The outcomes of internal transverse force and effective distribution width based on model test are compared with those derived from China and America bridge codes, respectively. As far as RC box girder within linear-elastic stage, various factors which have an effect on the transverse internal force distribution are presented and analyzed. With the parametric analysis, the author put forward empirical formulations based on two variables-the cantilever and the upper panel抯 relative rigid. Comparison with finite element analysis indicates that the empirical formulations meet required precision. A detailed research on the properties of transverse internal force and the development of effective distribution width of RC box girder are also presented when the material non-linearity is considered. In this paper a combined method of layered model and Mindlin plate theory is adopted to develop the program of Non-linear Finite Element Analysis of RC Box Girder.
