As one of three kinds of building materials widely used in China, steel has been so far applied to civil buildings to a quite limited extent. With accumulating experiments and technology, civil building made of steel is now being constructed to larger span or taller projects. However, there are two points to be more needed in steel structures during the design aspect, namely, one is how to select better structural system, the other is how to select better joints. This is very important to safety as well as to the cost of the whole building.Being a part of research in civil building made of steel, this thesis is aimed to how to solve the two problems mentioned above. In order to easily analyze and conveniently apply, civil building can be sorted into single layer, multistoried and tall buildings. In our country, there are already quite a number of practical projects of single layer and tall buildings. Adjust measures to local conditions. Through comparable studies, the author has used fuzzy judgements to help to choose better types. As regards to incomparable systems, feasible suggestions have also been given for the proper. The author has also provided feasible suggestions for the proper choice of steel joints and connections.Civil buildings of moderate heights used to be rarely constructed in steel in our country. As they are easy to erect and fast in construction, besides, being more adapted to the principle of sustainable development, more attention has been pain to their development by the relevant Department of the country as well as by our structural engineers. Based on the experience domestically and abroad, the author has brought forth several structural systems as well as their nodal systems have been introduced in the thesis.Moreover, the author has set forth and optimized designs for inclined beam of non-uniform portal frames.
