The seasonal frozen soil area distributes widely in China. The frozen damage of slab-foundation of channel irrigation structures in the Northeast of China is the most serious and includes the general characteristics of frozen damage of the channel irrigation structures.Culvert brake in seasonal frozen soil area is a common structure of water conservancy construction. Ordinary it takes over 30% cost of total irrigation buildings. In seasonal frozen soil area, frozen heave produces frozen-heave forces on the slab-foundation. It often make the slab-foundation damage due to bending, twisting and growth-up if the construction is build following non-frozen soil design methods. Finding the technology of reducing frozen damage of the slab-foundation in irrigation works is a great scientific research and economy construction project. The aim of this thesis studies frozen-heave forces on culvert brake slab-foundation. First, it introduces the reasons and types of frozen damage of the slab-foundation in seasonal frozen soil conditions. Secondly, the experimental studies of frozen soil mechanics were decided in order to revolve frozen-heave forces on the slab-foundation. The indoors experimental results show the influence of soil density, moisture, permeability and restrain on the frozen-heave forces. From year's observation in-situ, the field data supports the relationship of foundation area, embedded depth and superimposed load with normal frozen-heave force. The interact regularity of each heave force on the slab-foundation is obtained. This research is one part of a great scientific research project, which is supported by National Ministry of Water Resources and Electric Power of China, the People's Government of Heilongjiang Province and the Water Conservancy Department of Heilongjiang Province. Through a systematic research, the author enter to provide the theoretical basis for selecting reasonable index of normal frozen-heave forces and the technology for preventing and controlling frozen damage.
