Reliability study in power engineering system is a relatively new sphere. It first found its application in this field in the 1960's,where scientists and engineers tried to predict the reliability of the power system following several disastrous power system collapses. Reliability began its rapid development since Reliability Evaluation of Power Systems,a book first published in the 1970's by Roy Billinton. Since then, reliability became an important issue for power system engineers. With the continuous development of the power market after the deregulation in the modem power system, people rely more and more on the power system to provide with them uninterrupted and reliable electricity. How to meet their growing demands is of significant concern for the professionals in the power-engineering realm. This thesis briefly introduces the fundamentals on the power system reliability analysis in its preamble. It also covers current development in the power system reliability research and application, detailing the purpose of the reliability analysis.By associating the reliability analysis with digital simulation, power system reliability study entered a new era. Chapter 2 of this thesis demonstrates basic procedures of power system simulation and analysis, specifically reliability-related simulation and analysis,by using a comprehensive power system simulation package - EDS A.The major part of this thesis is dedicated to construct an appropriate algorithm to solve the reliability indices for a given power system. By analyzing the topology of an interconnected power system,Chapter 3 of this thesis derives the spanning tree, and builds the corresponding minimal cut set. By combining the results from the graph theory with the reliability indices of the individual reparable components, the reliability indices at the load point can be obtained, and the reliability indices for the whole system are deduced. This chapter also illustrates the concept of Composite Customer Damage Function, which is utilized by EDS A to evaluate the economy of the power system from the reliability perspective.Chapter 4 mainly discusses the application of the reliability analysis. A study case -Yunnan Kaiyuan Power Plant 2X300MW Project is presented. Three different wiring methods are compared based on their reliability indices and economic factors. Conclusions are drawn on their advantages and disadvantages. Recommendations are made regarding that.By combining the theory of reliability and the practice of digital simulation in the power system, the power system reliability study will become more and more sophisticated in the foreseeable future.
