This paper firstly introduces the background of the reform of the electricity industry, the history of the electricity markets and their status today. Models of trade in the electricity markets, as well as their classifications and features, are expounded.Voltage stability of the power system is one of the conditions that ensure power system's security. So studying it is of great importance, not only from theoretical, but also from practical. Static voltage stability study is mainly based on static model of the system. In chapter two we introduce the contents of voltage stability study and the available methods of nowadays, especially recommend the continuation method and direct method of calculating critical point of the static voltage stability.Available Transfer Capability(ATC) is the measure of the ability of interconnected power systems to reliably move or transfer power from one area to another. It is an important index in power market. In chapter three , transfer capability in contingency has been analyzed based on the constraint of voltage stability, and ranking of these contingencies has been discussed.Reactive Power Optimization is an important measure for the economical and stable operation of Power Systems , also it is a major part of OFF ( Optimal Power Flow ) problem. As a kind of search algorithm based on the mechanics of natural selection and genetics, GA (Genetic Algorithm ) is fairly fit for the problem of Reactive Power Optimization. In chapter four we present an approach to optimal reactive power based on an improved genetic algorithm. This algorithm improves the method of coding, operators and termination conditions.In the end of chapter three and chapter four , there are some calculation examples, they validate the correctness of the correlative methods.
