The protection of traditional habitation areas is a very complicated project of system engineering. It attracts more and more people. Heping, an ancient town, located in the north of Fujian province, is selected as the object of this thesis. Through analyzing its integrated structure and the texture of streets and alleys, the author tries to unearth the characteristics of space and culture, which are reserved in the town, to summarize and promote them. This will provide a new view for the following research about the traditional habitation areas. To counter the present situation of Heping, the thesis proposes some concrete methods on protection and renovation, that would not only make the ancient town maintain its traditional look, but also improve the villager's living condition and environment, as well as developing the local economy. Although this is just an isolated case, it may bring about a wider application in the practices, for example, being applied into the town design, even the city design. This thesis consists of three parts, added with the preface, remarks and appendix. In the preface, the author elaborates the motive, object, method and meaning of this work. In the first part, through the review of the theories and cases on the protection of traditional habitation areas at home and abroad, the author expects using those experiences for our project. In the second, based on the research of the history, geography and culture of Heping town, its integrated structure and streets modes are analyzed by means of drawing. That shapes the whole frame of this research. In the third, the author proposes a detailed plan on the protection and renovation: including the planning scheme and implement suggestions, which will make the project possible.
