With the development of the national interconnected power system, the structure, control and operation of electricity networks are becoming more and more complex.Voltage instability, mid and long term performance are ones of the most prominent problems while the conventional transient simulation tools are not adequate for analyzing and solving these problems. It is imperative to propose a new powerful tool. Based on summarizing the latest research results achieved by other authors up to now, this thesis does some work in the field of simulation method and modeling.According to the characters of the stiff system, this thesis has an elaborate discussion on the Gear algorithm focusing on numerical stability, error analysis, variable step size adjustment strategies and program implement. It also compares with other stiff algorithm, such as implicit Runge-Kutta, combined, hybrid algorithm and so on. From the analysis, it is believed that Gear algorithm is an effective one for power system dynamic simulation especially in the cases that do not need high computational accuracy. The difficulty of solving the right-hand equations is one of problems often found in system simulation. Based on variable step size algorithm, the thesis presents an investigation and studies of three different methods of handling discontinuities: detecting and handling discontinuities, average and polishing method. It is apparent that using mechanism for handling the discontinuities is better than ordinary method for saving computational time.Another responsibility of this thesis is to study prime and energy supply systems, which includes steam turbine and governing systems, fossil-fuelled energy systems, hydraulic turbine and governing system, AGC (Automatic Generation Control) and so on. The models listed above have been integrated into the standard model library. At last, using the simulation program to analyze the power system dynamic behavior, especially for testing the models during mid and long term period. The result of simulation demonstrates that power system dynamic simulation package could produce the results consistent with practical power system. It also provides users with a useful, effective tool to study and analyze the power system dynamic performance.
