The concept of vessel type means the characterizations that differ one type of vessel from others'. In consideration of those container vessels, vessel type includes such economic factors as the container capacity, dimensions, navigation speed and diesel consumption rate, etc. Vessel type choosing means, according to some principles and requirements, selecting the most suitable type of vessel to undertake the transportation in a specific route with some cargo volume.Because vessels are the fundamental implements of a ship company's operation, vessel type choosing will influence the realization of the company's operating object. COSCO Container Lines (COSCON), as a liner shipping company, meets some problems about the vessel updating and vessel type choosing in the process of its Far East / West Coast line (S line). Because this line is an important line of COSCON and there is serious competition on the market of this line, the adjustment of this line will directly determine the whole company's benefit. At the same time, it is necessary to choose super large vessels in upgrading this line, which leads to more risks in management and technology. Although there are some theories and procedures in ship purchasing and building in COSCON, they are little practical use because of lacking of correspondence with COSCON's daily operation. COSCON depends on its personnel's experience, not a scientific strategy to choose its vessel type in operation.To a shipping company, vessel type choosing means project evaluation and choosing, including confirming the evaluation system and selecting the technological method. This thesis analyses those factors influencing container line service, especially the factors about the scale economy in container transportation and entrenches basic principles in vessel type choosing according to author's years of management experience in COSCON.Based on those research and study, the thesis provides a practical evaluationsystem suitable to the transpacific line, including the factors about space cost, necessary freight rate, vessel capacity, vessel speed and vessel type maturity. Among them, the conception of space cost is an innovation and the conception of necessary freight rate is greatly improved. These two conceptions reflect the scale economy level in a concrete line. At the same time, the thesis draws the result of above-mentioned factors according to numerous statistic analyses and makes further analyses on the result.According to the principles in vessel type choosing, the factor system, the economic factor value and the company's panel evaluation, the thesis adopts comparatively advanced hierarchy analysis method, arranges and optimizes the optional vessel types and finally confirm the optimal vessel type.The thesis solves the problems in COSCON's vessel type choosing in its S line and lays the foundation for the launch of new vessels on that line.
