3500TEU container vessel is a type of PANAMAX container vessel with independentintellectual property, which is researched and manufactured by Shanghai Shipyard Co., Ltd(hereinafter to be referred as "yard") and Shanghai Merchant Ship Design And ResearchInstitute. During the nine years from June29th2001, when the first order,2vessels, wassigned between yard and Germany owner Norddeutsche Vermogen, to end of2009, yard haddelivered31vessels of3500TEU container vessel to4Germany owners (with10differentversions). At the same period, yard helped Zhejiang Shipbuilding Co., Ltd to design and build2vessels of same type.When the first batch of3500TEU container vessel (Hull No.: S197/198) being built,yard started to do the design optimization to this type of vessel. S197/198was3100TEUcontainer vessel when contract signed. But it became3500TEU container vessel whendelivered after design optimization. As the perfect performance after optimization, yard gotnew orders. New orders inspirit yard to do more optimization. Good optimization-order loopbrought31orders of3500TEU container vessel to yard. Furthermore, yard got8orders of3600TEU container vessel and4orders of NEW3500TEU container vessel after deepoptimization.During design of3500TEU container vessel, yard finished many optimization items asper characteristics of this type of vessel and continuous variety of Rules&Regulations. Thisarticle only fixes attention on the following optimization items.At first, yard researched the optimization of initial performance. This item includesintegrated performance, general arrangement, hull structure and etc. The integratedperformance includes main dimension optimization and hull line optimization. The generalarrangement optimization includes green oil&water tank arrangement, hold arrangement,container arrangement, E/R arrangement and accommodation arrangement. The hull structureoptimization focuses on hull strength optimization. Besides, the ship type optimization as perthe requirement of market is also described in this item.The second is launching mode. The length of slipway at Pudong is shorter than totallength of this vessel. The slideway of Chongming slipway is wider related with the line of thisvessel. This item describes how yard accomplishes the launching under her own hardware. The third is the application of stern tube assembly. The stern tube dimensions of this typeof vessel exceed the machining capacity. Yard imported the stern tube assembly and mountedis on board successfully by workmanship research. This workmanship is compiled companystandard after years of research.The forth is the optimization based on green Rules&Regulations. Many Rules&Regulations take effect related to environment protection during near ten years of building.This item describes the optimization to ballast water treatment and low sulfur fuel oil.At last, the owner wants to reduce the running cost as the higher and higher petroleumprize. So, high viscosity fuel oil is expected on vessel. This item describes the optimization onthis requirement.Above effort makes3500TEU container vessel become yard’s famous product.3500TEU container vessel is called with “Shanghai Shipyard Type” container vessel. CSSC tookcharge an authenticating meeting to the state high technical vessel brainstorm project,3500TEU container vessel at Shanghai on Sep.16th2005. Relative approval experts appraised thatthis type of vessel owned reasonable design and building, advanced technical and economicindex and reached the advanced level of internal same type of vessel.
