The purpose of the thesis is to research on the fountainhead of modern Minimalism architectural style and carry further thinking rather than chasing and boosting its form. In contrast with traditional reactionism and the abuse of architectural symbolic language in today of China, if it is only because of the agreement with the architect' s taste that Minimalism is chased and praised highly, how can we have the qualification to oppose reactionism? So, it is necessary to explore the style of Minimalism in such a time more and more importance is attached to it.On the base of inheriting the fundamental principals of the Modernism, beginning with the architectural language, minimalist architecture probes into the essence of the architecture, namely the essence of living. With the restrained forms and complicated meaning integrated, it shows strong individuality and creativity on material, structure, light and space. The researches were made on the theory of minimalist architecture systematically. Based on the abundant analysis on typical western minimalist architecture works, the thesis relieves the inner meaning of minimalist architecture and suggests the author' s own evaluation combined with the philosophical foundation of Minimalism, Zen Buddhism. The other features of Minimalism in different art fields are also presented, such as sculpture, painting, music and literature, and it indicates that Minimalism' s elite role has been fading and Minimalism become a common art trend . Lastly, this thesis inductively summarizes the primary features of minimalist architecture, presents the opinions on western Minimalist architecture and its influence on the development of Chinese architecture.The author has come to the conclusion that all that Minimalismhas done just means to clear up thoroughly the preexistentrestriction of consciousness to works. According Minimalism' sphilosophical fountain Zen Buddhism which demands breaking throughthe bondage to people' s mind from Buddhism commandment andemphasizes on freely apperceiving the world by "heart" after"sudden apperception" , the reason Minimalism is entitled as"ism" is that Minimalism is acting as "purification" and"unification" in diversified trends of thoughts of today, whichis the true meaning of "nous" in the "return to nous" .
