There are more than 8840 mines and 1500 tailing reservoirs in our country, and annual discharge is more than 0.3 billion tons. Moreover, the geographical location of most tailing reservoirs is very important. It is very difficult for tailing sites to avoid ecology sensitive and population denseness district. Some tailing reservoirs locate in the upstream of rivers, lakes or important water sources, some in the upstream of important public facilities, and some in the upstream of residential area. So the safety of tailing reservoirs is more important in our country. Through hydraulic model experiment and computer numerical simulation, this article discusses flood control safety and outflow stability of discharge system of Xiaoxigou tailing reservoir of Waitoushan iron mine belonging to Benxi Iron Company.Through hydraulic model experiment it measures the flow coefficient of weir and pipe flow and their dividing water head. According to the measured parameters it regulates the design flood. The computation results show that the flood control safety of tailing reservoir is higher than design standard. The experiment lays pressure sensors to measure the pressure of the discharge system, and the measure results show that cavitation erosion will never happen during outflow. The results of energy dissipation experiment show that the economic and feasible depth of energy dissipation well is 1.5 meter. The results of hydraulic model test and numerical simulation show that sympathetic vibration doesn't happen during outflow, moreover the maximum tension stress and compression stress is very small in discharge tower. The discharge tower doesn't be destroyed owing to intensity shortage.
