As an advanced manufacturing technology researched thirty years ago, CMS(Cellular Manufacturing system) has succeeded many merits of both CIMS(Computer integrated Manufacturing System) and FMS(Flexible Manufacturing System). Based on the philosophy of GT(Group Technology), CMS abstracts technology information and shop's resource information so as to obtain two principle components: machine groups and part families by which manufacturing cells can be founded, and then group scheduling and shop configuration are implemented. The thesis emphasized the first phase in manufacturing cell technology: CF(Cell Formation). First of all, it summarized predecessors' research methods and results, and then ART1 artificial neural networks and integer program based on the p-median method were utilized to simulate a classic example respectively. Finally, a case simulation and application in China Aviation Life-Support Research Institute were developed in which a quadratic programming model was founded and solved by a two-phases method. The model considered availability of multiple machines of the same type, processing times and batch information, and the objective function was to minimize the statistical variance of the ratio of loading to capacity in each cell. Besides, the thesis also offered a proposal for working in the dynamic environment. All programs for the thesis were compiled in MATLAB6.5.
