In this paper, passive damping techniques with piezoelectric element are investigated. Passive damping techniques are easier to realize and cheaper, comparing to active ones. The characteristics of piezoceramics are discussed in detail. The method of RL resonant circuit is applied to both single mode and Multimode damping on a cantilever beam. The parameters, R and L, are optimized by pole placement technique and the simulated inductor network is designed to meet the large inductances in the circuits. Another passive damping method, SSD (Synchronized Switch Damping), is preliminarily discussed. Some experimental results are presented and the damping effect is comparatively obvious. By comparing, both advantages and disadvantages of the two damping methods are obtained.
