The pavement structure and material are the key techniques for desert highway construction. Because of the special geographical condition of the desert area, the pavement material design and application for desert highway must comply with the principle of utility, feasibility and economy.Based on investigation , analysis and summarization of the desert highway structure and material from inner and aboard literatures, this thesis has systematically analyzed and studied the engineering characteristic of the wind-blown sand through laboratory experiments and field tests on experimental roads, incorporating with the research project of "The West China Transportation and Science Technology Project". Moreover, according to the principle of "obtaining raw material locally", it systematically studies three kinds of materials for stabilizing wind-blown sand to serve as the base & subbase, namely, inorganic binding material, organic binding material and Geocell, separately. The thesis has systematically studied the mechanistic behavior and shrinkage mechanism of the stabilized wind-blown sand with inorganic binding material; On the basis of evaluating two kinds of harder on the market, we have studied and produce a new kind of harder, CL, which has better pavement performance and is economic; It has studied the reinforced effect, strength mechanism and mechanistic behavior of Geocell stabilized wind-blown sand, and then gotten the design parameter of rebound modules. Finally, the thesis summarizes the design methodology and construction technique in preventing from pavement cracking caused by the stabilized-sand base.In study of pavement surface material, from the view of meliorating the asphalt performance, DIATEMITE modified asphalt mixture (DMAM) could improve pavement in-service performance and prolong life span. DMAM is able to adapt the desert climate and environment, and is more economic and applicable in construction compared to polymer modified asphalt mixture. Finally, the thesis proposes the design goals and design contents, recommends the technical target for DMAM.
