Water is a main natural control in determining highway service ability. Many damages taking place in highway engineering such as subgrade cave in, erosion, muddy, and collapse, and so on, have been caused by water influence or interacted effects. In our country, especially in the loess areas in Gansu Province, the road damages induced by rain or groundwater always occur, which will result in great loss in country economy. So it is necessary to study the regulation for wetting loess, and to provide a theory explanation and construction instruction. The fact that the microstructure, infiltration and mechanistic property of loess response to different degree of compaction has been analyzed, and concluded their law. The basic equation for water flow in unsaturated soil has been put out by combining Darcy law for unsaturated soil with equation for conservation of mass, it is regarded as the theory basis for numerical modeling. According to the redistribution of soil moisture, the soil water-migrate parameters have been determined. The water characteristic curve has been established by the centrifuge test. All the tested parameters have been used in finite element analysis. The numerical modeling outcomes has been gotten, which is compared with field test results to analyze the regulation for water conductivity in loess.
