Product data management (PDM) is a technique to manage the related information and the related technique of product. Information is the resources of enterprises. The quality of the information management influences the operation and efficiency of enterprises directly. As the classification and coding is the foundation of information management in PDM system, the quality of the code influences the difficulty degree of PDM implementation directly. So the classification and management system of products and parts based on coding becomes the key of PDM application. It can make enterprises fully utilize their resources, accelerate the creation of new resources, and improve the competitiveness of enterprises.Comparing and analyzing the structure and technological design mode of traditional and classification and coding system, the thesis shows the important function of the classification and coding system in the modernized design. The main research of this thesis carries on the method and application technology of classification and coding system under the environment of PDM. According to such system as VUOSO , OPITZn KK-3 and JLBM-1, etc, and deficiency in using of each system, fully consider the reality and requisition for classification and coding system, it promotes the method of flexible classification and management based on internal and external codes. The flexible classification codes is divided into internal code and external code: the external code functions as the only identification of product, it contends big class code, name code and order code; the internal code is the detailed description of the part, made up of name code, form and processing characteristic code and auxiliary code. Internal and external codes are used separately in different department of the enterprise, and their function is different, so it can solve the past problem of long codes, make the value of every code fully utilized.Using advanced PowerBuilder and SQL Server technology, the thesis develops the flexible classification and management system on the basis of classification and codingmethod. The system is divided into three major parts, such as coding, classification and system management. In the code part, realize the definition of code regulation and the production of codes; in the classification part, it can classify the product according to the code regulation and reality of the enterprise, and offer the way of inquiry based on attribute information, give the reliable basis for re-utilization of the enterprise parts and components; in the system management part, it offers the definition and management of the user, group and corresponding access authority.This system comes into operation in a glass machine Co, Ltd. It inputs more than 20,000 parts and components into computer, improved the repeated utilization ratio of the parts, accelerated the design cycle, and gets great favorable comment from users.
