It is well known that how to select suitable strength parameters of rock masses is of great importance in the design of geotechnical works. Whether or not these parameters are appropriately selected affects safety and investment of these works directly.After a comprehensive review of approaches on selecting strength parameters of geomaterial and an analysis of a large number of experimental results of strength parameters for rock masses, a systematic study on the method of how to get strength parameters of geomaterial was carried out by using the statistics theory in this thesis.These studies include:(1) Discussion of methods of rock mass classification and factors that affect the rock mass classification;(2) Determination of strength parameters of rock mass, (f, c) by the regression analysis and the combined distribution density functions of these two parameters, on the basis of the classification of rock mass; comparison of two different types of distribution density functions, and discussion of the application of the statistic software SPSS in regression analysis of strength parameters;(3 ) Discussion of the application of the Bayesian's method in selecting strength parameters. Bayesian's method can connect the "experience" with "test". Got the prior distribution, and combined the distribution of sample from the shear strength test of rock mass, the shear strength parameters of rock mass can be selected with Bayesian's method;(4) Development of an inquiry system of database for shear strength parameters of rock mass in water resources and hydropower works.
