The speed, sensitivity and reliability of transformer protection improve with the higher requirement of the power system security. The feature of power transformer protection is the large analog quantity. How to process the analog quantity quickly, reliably and accurately will influence the performance of transformer protection.At first, we review the concepts and component of the main protection and back up protection, and discuss the background knowledge and history of DSP. According to the concepts and history of transformer protection, we analyse the hardware structure and feature of the transformer protection device which based on 32-bit floating DSP plus 32-bit CPU, and participate in the development of the digital transformer protection device based on 32-bit floating DSP. This paper discusses the latest technical trend of DSP, especially the ADSP. We present a new improved algorithm of DFT according to the engineering requirement of digital transformer protection and the merits and demerits of the algorithms. This algorithm can reduces the calculation of non-recursive DFT obviously and increase the reliability. And we design programs based on 32-bit floating DSP to compare the improved algorithm with the non-recursive algorithm.
