The reliable and safe operation of power system is vital to national economy and social life. It is realized that the monitoring and protection techniques using transient signal could solve problems that could not be solved by conventional techniques based on power frequency components. With the development of technology of Micro-electronic and computer, it is possible to digitally record and process transients signals. There are significant breakthroughs in developments of transient based monitoring and protection equipments, such as transmission line fault locator, faulty line identification equipments in no-solidly earthed system.. However the existing transient data acquisition circuits could not successfully record the transient signals, and might miss the needed transient. This affects the performances of transient based monitoring and protection equipments.This paper begins with analysis of applications of transient signals in power system monitoring and protection. The specification of transient data acquisition system used in power system is derived. The shortcomings of existing transient data acquisition circuits are analyzed. They need to wait a time after a recording to allow main CPU to read out recorded transient data in data buffers, and therefore causes a dead time during which the circuit can not record the transient signals. A design scheme of transient data acquisition circuit is proposed. It achieves non-stop cyclic ultra-high speed transient data writing and reading by making use of devices, such as dual-port SRAM, FPGA, three-state gate, etc.A ultra-high speed transient data acquisition system is developed, which can successfully record transient signals without time interruptions. The parameters of the system, such as sampling frequency, length of recording, number of channels, can be configured on-line. It is also cost-effective.
