Local-style dwelling houses are a creation in the course of human being's livingand development, and a product of material and spiritual civilization, and also animportant referent of the development and progress of human civilization.Historically, before the 1950s, most minority nationalities living in the greatNujiang Gorge were still in the transitional period between primitive society and classsociety. Intact primitive dwellings are characteristic of their local-style dwellinghouses, which, therefore, have been regarded as a "living fossil" in architecture. Theirlocal-style dwelling houses are of great historical and cultural value as well as of greatresearch value.Field study and literature investigation have been used in the present research toexplore a proper way to preserve, develop and utilize minority nationalities'local-style dwelling houses in the great Nujiang Gorge so as to make contributions tothe development of the Nujiang area. To achieve the goal, the current research focuseson the influences social and natural environments have on the formation anddevelopment of local-style dwelling houses in terms of historical background,developmental conditions of local-style dwellings, architectural culture and thepresent situation of dwelling development in the Nujiang Gorge area.
