A Study On The Traditional Dwellings Of The Lisu Nationality In Nujiang,Yunnan Province

The Lisu nationality is one of national minorities unique to Yunnan,with a long-standing national history.The Nujiang valley in the Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture is the main habitat of the Lisu nationality.The special canyon of Nujiang isolates the Lisu nationality from the rest China.Before the founding of New China,the Lisu nationality was still in the late primitive society.Moreover,the Lisu nationality still retains the original style of primitive society,so it develops into a poor nationality with a small population size and poor living quality.In the process of urbanization,the Lisu traditional residence has been gradually assimilated,under the growingly great influence of external modern culture.Characteristics of its traditional residence have been declining and disappearing.Little research was made of the traditional residence of the Lisu nationality.Therefore,this research has two objectives.One is to improve the living standards of the Lisu people,so that the Lisu people can have equal access to fruits of modern civilization.The other objective is to protect national characteristics of the Lisu and maintain cultural diversity.In this paper,the traditional residence of the Lisu people in the Nujiang region was taken as the research object.Architecture,urban planning and other theories were combined with theoretical knowledge in sociology,ethnology,archeology,typology and other related disciplines,and literature review,field research,field mapping,comparative analysis and other research methods were applied to make an in-depth analysis of the traditional residence of the Lisu nationality in Nujiang.In this research,the natural and cultural environment of the Nujiang region was investigated to analyze the background that the Lisu residence appeared and the reason why the Lisu residence can develop.Moreover,field research cases were discussed to analyze settlements and individual buildings.Settlements were analyzed from site-selecting elements,layout features,spatial composition and other perspectives,while individual buildings were analyzed from the plane functions,fa?ade design,cross-sectional structure,construction techniques,architectural decoration and furnishings and other dimensions.A comparison was made between residential houses of the Lisu people and the local Nu people,and a summary was made of special architectural features of the Lisu residence,to provide materials for architectural creation and research.Design strategies were developed for protection and renewal of the traditional Lisu residence,on the basis of linking theory with practice,in order to respect and protect the traditional style of the Lisu residence,improve their living standards and enhance building security.On this basis,the author developed a renewal program for site selection of the Lisu residence,and worked out the “Design Guidelines for the Lisu Residence in Nujiang”,with the hope that research achievements can provide valuable supplement and reference to research on the Lisu residence,and contribute to heritage of the long-standing Lisu Culture.
