Asphalt mixtures are particulate composite materials consisting of uniformly distributed mineral aggregates, asphalt binder and air voids. In asphalt mixtures, the asphalt binder occurs not as asphalt alone, but is intimately mixed with mineral fillers forming new material called asphalt mastics. This new material is known to affect the workability of the asphalt mix and, therefore, play an important role in the compaction and performance of asphalt mixtures. Thus, asphalt mastics are the key factor effecting on the performance of asphalt mixture, which the research on is quite important. However, there were often some problems in actual projects caused by asphalt mastics, especially when asphalt and aggregate are both satisfied the criterions, the performance of asphalt mixture is still not well. The research on asphalt paving materials before was studying the asphalt binders and asphalt separately, and testing the performance of mechanics and in service use. These days, the evaluating system has formed, including empirical coefficients and the Superpave of SHRP. The asphalt mastics have long been known to influence the overall performance of asphalt paving mixtures. The behavior of the asphalt mastic bears influence on nearly every aspect of asphalt mixture design, construction, and performance. Although considerable work has been conducted to the mechanical properties of asphalt mastics, the researches were not systematization and very little work has been done in micromechanical numerical analysis. This study is intended for studying the rheological characteristics of asphalt mastics. The laboratory testing on asphalt mastics has performed by Dynamic Shear Rheometry (DSR) in order to observe the relation of rheological characteristics with temperature, fillers' size and content. The viscoelastical model parameters of asphalt mastics have been estimated based on the test results and analyzed. Finally, the DEM numerical simulation of DSR testing has been operated and compared with the actual test results.
