There is still a gap in information technology between China and the developed countries. Almost all the CPUs used in space engineering in China need to import from foreign countries. As a result, on-board computers in China have fallen behind in technology. The complexity of space engineering is increasing, and this needs higher and higher performance of on-board computers.It makes sense to research and develop on-board computers based on domestic CPUs. And it does good to develop our space technology independently, without being enslaved to other countries.SPARC (Scalable Processor Architecture) was invented in the labs of Sun Microsystems Inc., based upon pioneering research into Reduced Instruction Set Computing (RISC) at the University of California at Berkeley. SPARC, as an open on-board computer based on SPARC V8, is widely used in space engineering. The research of domestic SPARC V8 is on the beginning and there is still a long time to design it skillfully in China. It needs even more time to use it in space. Therefore, this paper designed a mini embedded system based on some kind of domestic one, which has made some good exploratory research for the domestic CPU to be used in the space engineering.The CPU based on SPARC V8 is designed by domestic companies, with performance of 80 MIPS, is one of the best CPUs that can be used in space designed by domestic companies.In this paper, serious and in-depth research on the current domestic and foreign on-board computer technology development, and analysis of the development trends and prospects is done. Tracking the current international advanced computer design concept, development of a small prototype high-performance computer system is completed to meet the needs of space engineering. On-board computer development process of design, technical problems and the solutions are discussed in detail. A detailed discussion of each module design, principle design, PCB design is done. And analysis summarizes the debugging strategies of hardware and software, V8 design language, initialization procedures and GDB serial debugging process. Comparison of power consumption and performance of the CPU in different frequency is tested. The article also discusses several embedded operating systems that support SPARC V8. With analysis and comparison of their merits and prospects, a best choice is given. On-board computer with advanced technology in and out of China is discussed.And in fact, we aim to design on-board computers that can satisfy the needs of future space engineering of our country. After perfecting the design, it can be used in aerospace engineering directly, so it has important practical value.
