How to design a modern Chinese landscape is now a burning question. Square Pagoda Garden in Songjiang is honoured as "a representation of our country's modern gardens" . It succeeded in "innovating with the tradition" , which sets a good example to us. This paper is aim to analyze how this garden inherited the tradition and how created with it.In order to make the analysis scientific and systemic, here draws in the Architectural Typology. After a systemic analysis of Square Pagoda Garden in three layers-spirit, layout, element-we find there are a lot of Types. And then, the process that the type becomes a new form is illustrated combined with the demands of the place. Where there is a Type, there is a subsurface connection with history based on the Architectural Typology. So if we find a traditional Type in the work, its "innovating with the tradition" is a success. The Design of Square Pagoda Garden is such a success. It told us that the creating means "broke the rules while agree with the way" . The way here means "reasonable" and "collective aethestic standard" . As an extension of the topic, this paper ends up with another topic-If we bring the Architectural Typology into Landscape Architecture, what is the sphere of application, and what is different that we should give some changes.
