The essay is to explore the appearance of 1933 London Underground Map seen from the angle of Graphic Design, a further insight into the socio-historical background, ideological root as well as graphic concept leading to its diagrammatic form with a preliminary analysis on Beck's revolutionary design, which provide reference for future research on relative underground system map and layout design.This essay consists of seven Chapters. Four Chapters are included in Part I, which aim to explore the socio-historical background, ideological root as well as graphic concept leading to the appearance of 1933 London Underground Map from four aspects: Call of the Age; Preconditions of Revolution; Design Management Strategy Conducted by Sir Frank Pick, Managing Director of the Underground Group; and Predecessors' Exploratory Efforts on the Underground Map. The fifth Chapter gives a detailed look at the entire process of the creation of 1933 London Underground Map and our celebrated designer Harry Beck. The Sixth and Seventh Chapters as a whole, make a preliminary analysis of Beck's idea on layout with the innovation applied and its contribution to the field of Graphic Design.
