Geographic Information System (GIS) is an advanced computer software technology which integrates modern computer system and database to input, edit, analyze, store and display space and its attributes. GIS can provide support and service to enterprises' research, decision-making and management. In China, GIS was first applied in institutions of scientific research, environment resources, etc. Then its application was extended to urban planning sectors and agriculture sectors. Now GIS has been widely used in land management, facility management, military and commercial sectors. The application of GIS in underground pipelines systems was dated back to mid-1980s. Nowadays a few cities are operating with GIS to set up a comprehensive and specialized database for infrastructure utilization. In the fields of telecommunications, water supply system, heating pipelines systems and gas networks, lots of research activities have been carried out to integrate GIS for management. There is a developing trend that GIS-based underground pipeline system database is becoming a powerful tool for local gas companies to manage their operation in a more scientific way.Analysis for the present management system in Xi'an gas company was performed in this paper. It was suggested in this paper that GIS technology should be introduced in the pipeline system, and then some problems could be solved and optimum operation could be anticipated. The framework of the proposed GIS management system was also put forward, and its functions were described as well. Theoretically, GIS can be a useful tool to resolve present problems, and to improve operation safety and efficiency. There are many problems in Xi'an gas company pipeline systems, only 1 or 2 of which were settled in this paper. In addition, more functions can be realized through GIS. For example information release can become public through utility data networks. The underground pipeline management can be digitalized as well. Due to limitation of time, many problems remained to be fixed.
