The study on energetics of mechanochemistry has important significance for mechanical activation of minerals, mechanical alloying and preparation of powders and compounds. In this study,a new set of mechanochemical calorimeter was calibrated and tested. And the storage energy of mechanically activated pyrites and two kinds of oxide(ZnO and CuO)were investigated during the process of mechanical activation with this apparatus.1.The thermal constant, stability, accuracy and blank experiments at different temperature and different medium were investigated for the apparatus. The results indicate that the performance and functioning of the machine are correct. And it is proper for the study of energetics during the process of mechanochemistry. The output power of milling at different speed and different temperature were specially investigated through blank experiments.2.The mechanically activated storage energy of pyrites was measured separately during the processing of wet grinding and dry grinding. And the structural changes of mechanically activated pyrites were investigated using laser granularity analysis and X-ray diffraction analysis. The results indicate that the mechanically activated storage energy of dry grinding is larger than that of wet grinding at the primary stage of mechanical activation, but at the ending stage they tend to be uniform. The storage energy of wet grinding in 480min is 370.0 J·g-1(44.4 kJ·mol-1),while the storage energy of dry grinding in 480min is 366.9 J·g-1(44.0 kJ·mol-1).The increase of surface energy after mechanical activation is not the main aspect of the whole mechanically activated storage energy of pyrites.3.The mechanically activated storage energy of ZnO and CuO were measured separately during the processing of mechanical activation. And the structural changes of mechanically activated ZnO and CuO were investigated using laser granularity analysis and X-ray diffraction analysis. The results indicate that the storage energy of mechanically activated ZnO is 384.2 J·g-1(31.27 kJ·mol-1)and the storage energy of mechanically activated CuO is 686.9 J·g-1(54.63 kJ·mol-1).Both of the increase of surface energies of the two oxide after mechanical activation are not the main aspect of the whole mechanically activated storage energy either.
