Gear mechanisms have been used extensively in various industrial applications, such as gear boxes on vehicles, machine tools, speed-reducers and various transmission systems. Basically, gears are used to transmit a constant speed ratio between the input and output shafts, and to magnify or reduce the torque with the inverse of the ratio. Although the technologies for the design and manufacturing of gears have been improved quite a lot in these few decades, however for some applications, the existence of axial force and the deficiency of carrying capacity restrict the development of gear. Thus, researches on developing innovative gears with better characteristics are necessary. Gear manufacturers and designers continuously attempt to develop more compact and higher capacity gear pairs.The involute arc cylindrical gear which this paper puts forward is one new type of gear transmission form. Arc cylindrical gear has some excellence for example :it has good mesh capability,the axial force could be cancelled one another,the transmission efficiency is high,the anti-curved intensity is big,the tooth face contact intensity is good and so on. The arc cylindrical gear has the superior transmission characteristic,so it could replace the using of spur cylindrical gear,helical cylindrical gear and herringbone cylindrical gear in the majority application environment. And it also has other characteristics, for instance steady transmission,low transmission noise,high efficiency,long service life, etc. It can be used in the arc cylindrical gear pump,arc cylindrical gear retarder and some other fields. It has the broad application prospect.Because the research history of this type of gear is not long, and it has too much problem of theory and practical application which to be resolved. For example: due to the restrictions of manufacturing technologies, its geometry parameter was unclear, the research of bearing capacity wasn't deep enough, and manufacturing method wasn't ideal enough etc. It's necessary that we will do the further research to it.This paper introduced the history of gear's development and the current situation of research. It discourses the mesh mechanism of gear and determines the geometry parameter of involute arc cylindrical gear. Based on the mesh mechanism of gear, the gear pair mesh characteristic were derived, including the flank expression and the conjugate flank expression,the line of mesh and the line of contact expression.This paper researched design procedure of involute arc cylinder gear's tooth flank contact stress and root of tooth bending stress. It established model of arc cylinder gear, and used the FE method to analyze its gear pair tooth flank contact fatigue strengthen and root of tooth bending fatigue strengthen. Compared with other cylinder gear, it had predominant transmission characteristic. It analyzed the shortcomings of arc cylinder gear's manufacturing method at present and put forward a reliable manufacturing method.At the end of the paper, it gave a summary and outlook of the following work. It is firmly believed that the arc cylinder gear will be improved continually. It has obvious advantages in gear transmission. It can be widely used.
