Backhoe device is the uppermost working device of small and medium-sized hydraulic excavator, the design of this device will have a direct impact on the performance of the machine. However, to such complex systems as the structure of Backhoe device, the traditional product design method whose development cycle is long and cost is high, has been unable to meet the flexible demands of the market. So, in order to studying the related mechanical properties and optimizing this device, to introduction the powerful, convenient and low-cost virtual prototyping technology to the design and research of excavator is necessary.This paper summarizes the researches of virtual prototyping technology in the excavator field and the existing problems, and based on the kinematics modeling and dynamic modeling of the hydraulic excavator backhoe device, researches are carried out as follows:Through the software of Pro/Engineer and ADAMS, the virtual prototype of the hydraulic excavator was constructed successfully; For the problem of over-constraint that is often overlooked in the process of building a virtual prototype, the method "change constrains, remove equations" is put forward, which provides a channel for the solution of the problem.Based on the virtual prototype, the motion envelope diagram of the backhoe device is drawn, and the special job size of the excavator is got, which is very close to its design values. Aiming at the force acted on key hinged joints of the backhoe device, the simulation of three typical working conditions is carried out. Because of the shortcomings of the traditional calculation method, this paper uses the method that amends the parameters of simulation according to the experiments, gets the largest value of digging force generated by the excavator conveniently. In accordance with the strategy of combination main objective law and unity objective law, optimization design to the excavator backhoe device is completed, and better mechanical performance is obtained.The experiments of testing the maximum digging force and the simulation parameters are carried out based on the hydraulic excavator SWE85, which verify the reliability of the built virtual prototype, and provided guidance data to the simulation-driven functions.
