The philosophy and methodology of performance-based seismic design (PBSD) has been an extensive topic discussed by earthquake engineering expert at home and abroad, and this method has its obvious advantages when it is applied to the design of structure-controlled systems. Shape memory alloy (SMA) has unique shape memory, super-elasticity and high damping characteristics as a kind of new-type intellectual material, receive the great concern in the field of structure vibration control.In this paper, a new type SMA damper making use of SMA wire was designed. When the damper was in a tensile, compressed or twisty condition, the SMA wire is always in the condition of tension. The passive energy dissipation control of seismic vibration in this text makes use of the super elasticity and high damping of tensile SMA wire.The main contents are as follow:(1)Adopt ANSYS to analyze the influence to the mechanical property of SMA wire by changing the temperature of environment,frequency of load and strain amplitude of SMA wire.(2)Design a new type of SMA damper basing on the analyse of SMA wire and analyze the change of characteristic parameters of SMA damper when the displacement amplitude and pre-strain are different.(3)On the basis of the study of a 10-story building, five groups of the placement of the damper are used in time-history dynamic analysis .By contrasting the five different results, the influencing rules of the placement of the damper on seismic response of the structure can be concluded.(4)By contrasting the results of the frame with the optimal design and the original structure, the results prove that the SMA damper can reduce the earthquake action effectively; it also proves that the optimal design can implement the important performance objective "no damage under moderate earthquake and maintainable under major earthquake".(5)The optimization design on the beam and column of a 10-story frame and the damp and the stiffness of the damper according to the cost-effectiveness criterion , is helpful to the evaluation of the performance and economy for this type structure.
