The contravention of vehicle parking between supply and demand becomes more and more conspicuous and serious in some major cities of China during these years, while Parking Guidance System (PGS) offers an effective solution to solve this issue. The System is an important component of ITS (Intelligent Transportation System). The System is the integrated system of applying vehicle automatic location technology, GIS (Geographic Information System), database technology, computer technology, multimedia technology and contemporary communications technology.In this paper, the necessity and feasibility to build the Parking Guidance System are pointed out first. The advantages and disadvantages of the present parking guidance system at home and abroad are also introduced. The main subject in this article is to design and realize an optimal path algorithm in a Parking Guidance System (PGS). On the basic of studying classical Dijkstra algorithm, the algorithm is improved in determining road weight and searching area, then the optimal path algorithm adopted by a PGS is obtained.The article also tells how to design and make a simulated system. It introduces the development of the whole system using VC++ object-oriented program as designing platform, MapInfo/MapX as development tool. In addition, it explains how to design a simulated PGS and realize partly the algorithm in the PGS . Simulation results show that the algorithm is not only feasible but also practical. And a good development for solving the parking contravention between supply and demand is done.
