With the development and progress of society, motor vehicle has become an indispensable means of transport. However, various types of traffic accidents threat people's lives and property. Therefore the overall performance of motor vehicles and safety requirements are much more important than before. In order to increase the benefit of automobile industry and safeguard the interests of consumers, the research about the overall performance of motor vehicles has become the most important problem of our automobile industry.Cars are complex structures which has the composition of engine, body, under-chassis and electrical equipment, etc. Car-body is an important part of car and the performance of the body has a great impact on the performance of car. The loads acted on motor vehicle in actual are very complex. So, using the classical mechanics method to carrying out analyzing has significant limitations. The analysis of complex structures could be easily carried out by finite element method. With the development and application of finite element method, a much reliable method for simulation and calculation of the overall performance and safety requirements of motor vehicles is found.Based on the stress of car-body, mechanical properties of the body skeleton have been studied and neglected body panels. Using the finite element analysis software ANSYS, finite element model of car-body is established by element of non-uniform beam. Then the static characteristic of car-body under different conditions is analyzed, the natural frequency and modal are obtained through modal analysis, which could provide basis for design and optimization of motor vehicle. In order to research the passive safety, frontal crash simulation has been carried out by LS-DYNA analysis module. The change of crashing speed, acceleration and energy in the collision process have been obtained, which could provide reference for further analyze.Through the auto-body static strength analysis, modal analysis and frontal crash simulation, this auto-body's overall performance is studied systematically and comprehensively. The amendment scheme is provided for the design of car-body, which could provide basis for optimum design.
