The road roughness is one of the most important indexes of performance for appraising highway especially speedway. As a result of which, how to measure it fleetly and accurately has become a quite significant issue. With the development of sensor technology, vehicle bearing road profilometer, which is famous for non-contact, high-speed, long distance, high precision characteristics, has become the developed direction for road roughness detecting technology. Therefore, the design and experimental researches are implemented on vehicle bearing road profilometer in this paper.Firstly, the definition of road roughness is introduced, and then, the current development and direction of the road roughness testing technology at home and abroad are presented. At the same time, the most widely used evaluation indicator- International Roughness Index IRI is introduced. As expected, the definition, algorithm and properties of IRI are concretely studied.According to the above work, the detection system of vehicle bearing road roughness profilometer is designed. The whole system is on the basis of laser ranging technique. The designing mainly including:1) the indexes of performance,2) the research on the method of vertical vibration and longitudinal displacement measurement,3) the parameters'analysis and selection of sensor,4) the design of mileage display and control system,5) and the data's acquisition and processing.By using the indoor vibration platform, some experiments are done to the above detecting system. The effect of frequency and amplitude on IRI is studied, and the amending effect of platform vibration by accelerometer is analyzed. Finally, on the outdoor road, three experiments are implemented, including:1) repeatability experiment,2) the influence of the vehicle speed on experimental results,3) and correcting analysis with the standard instrumentation. In a word, the experimental results show that the system is stable, reliable and has practically worth on application.
