The arch foot of long-span steel arch bridge, which has complex structure and stress characteristics, is subjected to great axial force and bending moment. Besides, there is also an issue of the internal force transmission between the steel and concrete structures. Based on the Xijiang Bridge, which is a 450-meter half-through x-style arch bridge on the Nanning to Guangzhou high-speed railway, the meticulous material nonlinear as well as the finite element simulation analysis is performed. And also a 1:8 scaled segment model experiment of the connection area between the arch foot and pedestal is carried out. The main work is as follows:1. The spatial finite element model of Xijiang Bridge is established. Static computation of completed phrase has been conducted and the most unfavorable load combination effect of arch foot nodes is determined, which can provide basis for local analysis.2. The linear as well as nonlinear refined finite element analysis model of the connection area between arch foot and skewback is established respectively. Local stress distribution analysis of three different schemes of arch foot transition section is completed, the results of which are compared with the initial design. The Rational scheme of structure is proposed.3. On the basis of the similarity theory, a 1:8 scaled model of the transition region between arch foot and pedestal is designed and made. The self-balanced loading system and testing system are designed to test the local stress and deformation field by simulating three load cases of axial and eccentric force.4. According to comparative analysis and mutual verification of results from model test and finite element analysis, local stress distribution law and force characteristics of the connection section between arch foot and skewback are summarized, which can provide references for the design of the real bridge. The method based on the combination of theory calculations and experiment is adopted in this paper. Local stress distribution law and force characteristics of the connection section between arch foot and skewback are explored. It provided the reasonable foundation and suggestion for the conformation design. The conclusions also can be regarded as the reference for the design and construction of other similar bridges.
