The Preservation and Revival of Historic District (PRHD) is a hot topic, which emphasizes on both practice and theory research, in China's urban development. Scholars from history, archeology, sociology, economics, and architecture give different interpretations to it. However, academics are still puzzled:why the economy often dominates the culture? Why the culture is often in a superficial form? Some scholars propose how should the traditional Chinese culture be truly heritage, how should the historical process be really presented, and how should historic district to get a constant vitality and energy.While reading the articles of Cultural Ecology and its application in other related fields, the author gets the inspiration that, Can Cultural Ecology be used in the topics about PRHD? Based on this idea, the paper proposes the following research questions.The author assumes that through the introduction of Cultural Ecology into PHRD, several major questions may be answered. First, what are the advantages of leveraging Cultural Ecology in PRHD? Second, what kind of solutions can Cultural Ecology provide to PRHD? Third, what opinions should be held while viewing PRHD from the Cultural Ecology perspective? At last, how to guide the practice of PRHD by using Cultural Ecology? The paper is organized as below to answer the above questions.ChapterⅠintroduces the origin, research objects and related concepts in the problem. This chapter states the five basic questions in the paper and explains the methods, objectives and framework of this work.ChapterⅡpoints out how to combine Cultural Ecology and PRHD based on the development process of these two element research objects.ChapterⅢshows out the main issues and problems in PRHD. According to these, the value and meaning of bring in Cultural Ecology are analyzed.ChapterⅣdetermines the content, principle and approach of PRHD under the instruction of four ideas in Cultural Ecology.As a member of the design team, the author gives interpretation and evaluation of the Cultural Ecology view in the designing and planning process. At last, we conclude in three main perceptions:the emphasis on cultural heritage, the return of real life, and sustainable exploitation.The author looks forward to provide academic opinions to architects, planners and urban managers, which may give them a chance to start having a "culture" perspective on PRHD and take the culture as the key point in PRHD.
