In the book County Agriculture, Bao Shichen (1775 855), one of the versatile and excellent thinkers during the pre-and post-Opium War, greatly developed Chinese traditional thought of agricultural technology. The present paper, almost for the first time, systematically studies hi thought in this aspect. 1 .Briefly narrates Bao life story and analyses his 1) practice-orientated philosophy; 2)morality of integrating justice and material benefit; 3) economical viewpoint that both agriculture and other professions create wealth ;and 4) thought that local governments should value and popularize agricultural technology. 2.Studies Bad thought of agricultural technology: diversified economy. 1) It deals with Bao overall thought frame of agricultural technology and his agricultural perspective in ;i broad sense .2) It probes the origin and development of his thought of diversified economy. 3 More importantly, it investigates how his thought is been revealed in planting, sideline, forestr\, animal husbandry and aquatic cultivation. 4) It discusses that Bao suited measures to local conditions and meticulously planned land utilization to push forward diversified economy. 5) It proves that Bao strenuously appeals for full treasuring and using of agricultural labor force to implement his technological thought. 6) It researches into Bao technological thought of preparing for famine relief. 3.Taking planting as a main point, it studies Bao thought of intensive farming, such as multi- crop a year, soil tillage, mid-cultivation management and reasonable application of manure, etc. 4.Studies Bao thought of marginal land utilization containing reclamation of wasteland for rice planting, rational development of mountainous land, seaside saline-alkali soil, low-lying paddy fields surrounded with dikes, river waterside land and city wasteland. Finally, it summarizes Bao dominant agricultural thought of technology, meanwhile, draws some lessons for the sustainable development of modern agriculture. A few limitations are pointed out and Bao historic position is tentatively recommended.
