The distribution and developing changes of choline acetyltransferase immunoreactive (ChAT-IR) products in the diencephalons of postnatal 1,6,10,14,18,90,180,480 days chicken was studied by using the technique of immunohistochemistry SP. The results were follows:1. There were three types of ChAT-IR positive neurons i.e., intensely stained cells, medium stained cells and lightly stained cells. ChAT-IR positive neurons were widely distributed in each nuclei of diencephalons. The ChAT-IR positive fibers and terminals with varying density and reactive intensity were seen in some nuclei. There were two kinds of fibers with varicose and non-varicose. With the developing mature and functional perfecting of brain, the density and reactive intensity of immunoreactive products kept regular change.2. There were five kinds of changing regularity of the density of ChAT-IR products in chicken from one day to eighteenth day. One was ascension and then decline, Which included medialis habenular nucleus, lateralis habenular nucleus, commissurae pallii nucleus, commissurae anterioris nucleus, supraopticus nucleus,supraopticus pars diffuses nucleus. Second was constant and then decline, which included lateralis ventralis nucleus, decussationis supraopticae dorsalis nucleus, superficialis parvocellularis nucleus, subrotundus nucleus, periventrcularis arcuatus nucleus, hypothalamic parvocellularis nucleus, paraventrcularis hypothalamic nucleus, periventricularis preopticus nucleus, medialis mammilary nucleus, lateralis mammilary nucleus, ectomammilaris nucleus. Third was decline, which included lateralis anterior nucleus, rotundus nucleus, ovoidalis nucleus. Forth was decline and then ascension, which included dorsolateralis anterior nucleus, dorsomedialis anterior nucleus, dorsolateralis posterior nucleus and dorsomedialis posterior nucleus. Fifth was constant, which only included geniculatus lateralis nucleus. The above regularity suggested the developing disequilibrium of cholinergic nuclei in brain.3. The reactive intensity of ChAT-IR products in diencephalons of one to eighteenth days chicken showed the tendency of intensifying and then weakening, the tendency of keeping constant and then weakening and the tendency of weakening. The result showed that with the development of brain, the concentration of ChAT changed, which suggested that ChAT might play the role of nutritional factor in course of the development of cholinergic nerve.4. The densituy and reactive intensity of ChAT-IR positive products in diencephalons of one to eighteenth days chicken mostly presented their respective higher level and presented the highest level in one days or six days chicken, which suggested that this stage was the developing fastigium of cholinergic nerve,especially at the stage of one days to six days.5. There were five kinds of changing tendency of the density of ChAT-IR positive products in 90,180 and 480 days chicken. The tendency of keeping constant only included medialis habenular nucleus, and the tendency of decline also only included lateralis habenular nucleus. The tendency of ascesion and then keeping constant included lateralis ventrialis nucleus, decussationis supraopticae dorsalis nucleus, lateralis anterior nucleus, dorsolateralis posterior nucleus, rotundus nucleus, hypothalamic parvocellularis nucleus, paraventricularis hypothalamic nucleus, medialis mammilary nucleus, lateralis mammilar nucleus, ectomammilaris nucleus. The tendency of ascnesion and then decline included geniculatus lateralis nucleus, dorsolateralsi anterior nucleus, dorsomedialis anterior nucleus, ovoidalis nucleus, subrotundus nucleus, commissurae anterioris nucleus, commissurae pallii nucleus, periventrcularis preopticus nucleus, supraopticus arcuatus nucleus. The tendency of keeping constant and then decline included dorsomedialis posterior nucleus.
