Agriculture is one of the focal point of regional historical geography study. As the source of basic necessities of life in feudal society, the development and evolution of the field Crops had ever made a deeply effect on politics, economy, culture, customs and habits of a certain region during historical period. In the light of regional history and take the perspective of time and space as clue, this paper makes a all梤ound and systematic exposition .on the evolution of the staple crops in Three Gorges of Changjiang Area. Analyses their geographical distribution and characteristics. It also discusses the contributing factors of these crops and the strong effects that those characteristics brought on Three Gorges of Changjiang Area. This paper consists of two parts: preface and main body. In the preface, the author give an all梥ided account of the agriculture ecological enviroment, such as topography and landforms, soil and climate ect. Pointing out that it was just because of these unfavourable factors that handicapped and restricted the progress of the crops?evolution greatly during historical period. In the main body, three topics are expounded. 1. The evolution and geographical distribution of Major Grain Crops in Three Gorges of Changjiang Area during historical period. A detailed expound on the region, introduction, spread and extend, geographical distribution are made on the major Grain Crops in Three Gorges of Changjiang Area. Thus, the author draw an elementary outline of the evolution and development of those Grain Crops. 2. The evolution and geographical distribution of Major Economic Crops in Three Gorges of Changjiang Area during historical period. As for the discussion structure, this part is similar to the first one. Some major Economic Crops such as oil梑earing crops, sugar crops, raw material of handicraft crops, hobby crops and vegetables ect., are mentioned. 3. The characteristics, contributing factors and influence of the evolution of Staple 3 Crops in Three Gorges of Changjiang Area during historical period. This part is the conclusion and summaries of the first two parts. It obtains three characteristics of the crops?evolution from vertical analyses and compared it with some other agriculture areas which lie on both sides of Three Gorges of Changjiang Area from horizontal angles. In the last, the paper reaches the influence that the characteristics had brought on Three Gorges of Changjiang Area.
