AbstractCelangul in IV is the act ive narconic compound isolated from the rootbark of cei8strus 8ngu18 tus. Stud ies have been conducted on theul trastructure of the armyworm, (Lcuc8Bi8 sop8ra t8), wi th the e1ectr ic..microscope. fhe main results are as fol lowing:The u1 tras tructure of the armyworm larvae (cei8strus 8nguia tuS) ofmidgut les ion by celangul in IV has been examined in vivo. Progress ive..poi soning of armyworm 1arvae by Celangul in IV is character ized by the spaceof intercel lular between columnar epi thel ia l cel ls and cotyloid cel 1 sincreased fo11owing microv i l l i d i la ta l ted. Endop lasmic ret iculum (ER) andER ves icae were extremely expanded and ves iculat ions appeared.Mi tochondria of columnar cel l were swol len wi th lemma disrupted. I tindicated that celangul in IV had rea l ly di srupted the s tructure of midgutcell. The increased space of intercel lular and the 1esion of midgut cel lsmade the toxin easi1y come throughout the midgut ce1l and enter into thehemocoel, and fina1ly come to the target. It was possib1e that the midgutcel ls were the initials target of celangul in lV.The sys tems of plasma 1emma and endomet r ium, and n1yof ibr i of theskeleta l muscles of arfnyworm underwent progress ive myotoxi ty damagefol lowing celangul in IV. The p1asma1emma of fl ight muscles armyworm adu1 tbehaved lysis by celangu1 in IV. Parts of dyad and sarcoplasmic reticulumdisappeared, pr imary lysosome and cryins ta l l ine inc lus ions appeared. Theprogress ive les ion appeared in the Myocyte of armyworm larvae from the primary paralysis stage to the deep paralys is stage. The sarcolemmad is rupted and myof i 1amen d if fused wi th ArIangement d isordered,Mi tochondr ia swel led and pr imary Lysosomes appeared in the primarypara lys is stage. Myocyte have been broken down ser ious 1y on the deeppara1ys is stage: the sarcolemma d isappeared, and the space betweenbasement membrane and myof ibr i 1 increased, par t s of myof ibr i l d isrupturedand the Cristae of mitochondria ruptured. Whi le the electric densi ty ofcryins ta 1 l ine inc lus ion increased, par t s of nuc 1ear membrane d isappearedand nuc 1eoplasm spi l led. Secondary Lysosomes appeared and the s truc tureof mi tochondr ia complete1y des troyed wi th cris tae breakage on theanabiosis stage. It was possible that celangu1 in IV induced the lesion ofthe structure of myocyte. Whi le the cryins tal l ine inc1us ions wereposs ible that the spat ial structures of some structura1 proteins occurredchanges, it suggested that celangul in IV might resu1 ted in the proteindecompensa t ion. I t indica tes tha t myocyte is another target of celangul inIV.Celagul in IV did rea1 ly disrupt the u1 trastructures of neuromuscularjunct ions (NMJ). The quant it ies of circu1ar clear synapse ves iclesdecreased on the para1ysis stage, and increased on the anabios is stage,too. I t showed that ce1angu1 in IV affected the synthes is and re1ease ofthe synapse vesicles and the decreased synapse ves icles of the nervetermina 1 was the main reason that the insect were para 1yzed. Moreover, thefla t ted s tructure of pos tsynapt ic membrane resul ted in space increasedbetween the nerve termina l and myocyte, thi s effected the diffus ion ofneurot ransmi t ters from nerve to myocyte. I t was com f irmed tha tneuromuscu1ar junct ions were the target of ce langu1 in IV.
