Achyranthis bidentata Blume is a traditional Chinese herb. It is reported that many chemical constituents, such as polysaccharide, triterpenoid saponins, and steroids have been found in its root. These constituents show various biological functions, and clinic values, such as anti-fertility, anticancer, antibacterial, immune adjustment and anti-inflammatory activity. Constituents of seeds and roots of A. bidentata have been studied in this paper. The results showed:1. Six compounds were isolated from the seeds of A. bidentata by combined column chromatography over silica gel, reverse phase silica gel, Sephadex LH-20 and high performance liquid chromatography. On the basis of UV, ESIMS, NMR spectral data, they were identified as N-trans-feruloyltyramine (1), glycerol-1,9,12-(Z Z)-octadecadienoic ester (2),β-ecdysterone (3), ergosta-7,22-diene-3β,5α,6β-triol (4), oleanolic acid 28-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (5), and daucosterol (6). Compounds 1, 2, and 4 were isolated from this plant for the frist time.2. Five compounds were isolated from the roots of A. bidentata by combined column chromatography over silica gel, reverse phase silica gel, Sephadex LH-20 and high performance liquid chromatography. On the basis of UV, ESIMS, NMR spectral data, they were identified as daucosterol (1) , oleanolic acid 28-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (2), oleanolic acid 3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (3),β-ecdysterone (4), and polypodine (5), Compound 3 were isolated from this plant for the frist time.Although there were lots of studies on the chemical constituents of A. bidentata, some new compounds which were never reported from this plant were isolated. These results provided useful imformation for further use of this medicinal plant.
