The Instruments major within musical vocational colleges is heavily influenced by traditional methods of teaching. These institutions follow the philosophy of "the teacher as the primary, the student as the secondary" and "the teacher as object, the student as subject." This time-honored philosophy concentrates on the result rather than the process, training instrumental functionality rather than supplementing professional knowledge, performance abilities rather than the impact of the student's psychology, and the differences amongst individuals. Not only is this teaching method inconsistent with our country's academic responsibility of providing a "people-based education" and our thesis of a "student-based education," it ultimately impacts the outcome and efficiency of teaching. Through this thesis, the author intends to push instructors from musical vocational colleges to pay more attention to the object of the study-the student. This research topic lies within the principles of a "people-based" teaching philosophy. Through the methods of academic research, comparisons, surveys, statistics, interviews, observations, and behavioral research, this thesis uses the students'age and the age at which they started professional studies as benchmarks to analyze characteristics of the typical learning psychology of musical vocational college students and the impacts of these characteristics on their performances. In light of the goals of musical vocational colleges, this research probes some possible teaching solutions within the Instruments major. These results may have theoretical and analytical value for the purpose of training future instructors who are more focused and practical in their teaching methods.
