| This paper is a critical discussion on a thesis entitled The Effect of Schema Theory and EMSR on the Fast Reading among College Students written by Gao Yang from Jilin University. After ten weeks training with schema-theoretic applications instruction and EMSR classroom instruction, Gao draws a conclusion that the experiment group gets higher scores in fast reading test than the control group. It seems true and credible, but the researcher can't help wondering:are the higher scores achieved because of both schema theory and EMSR? Can it possibly be just out of schema alone or EMSR alone? If they both work, do they have different influences when it comes to different genres? To tackle these questions, firstly, the literature review of both schema and EMSR should be done; then two separate experiments, one is schematic, the other is with the application of EMSR, are conducted among three classes from Jiangmen Polytechnics, Guangdong Province to explore the effects of schema theory and EMSR on fast reading and data are analyzed and discussed with the help of SPSS11.5.The results show that (â…°) Formal schema contributes to the improvement of reading comprehension rate; (â…±) Eye movement training help students read faster without lowering the comprehension rate. Average reading efficiency of the experimental classes is 20 WPM higher than that of the control group; (â…²) The comprehension rate of class one is better than that of class two since they have been instructed with formal schema theory before. |
