Since the 1980s, an increasing number of English teachers and learners held that vocabulary is a basic component of a language, since "......without vocabulary, nothing can be conveyed." (Wilkins,1972) and "language consists of grammaticalized lexis, not lexicalized grammar." (Lewis,1993)With times advancing and the international cooperation increasing, English has become a more and more broadly used language and naturally makes a higher and higher demand on the teaching and learning of English, especially that of English vocabulary.In consideration of the more emphasis attached to vocabulary teaching in Teaching English as Foreign Language (TEFL) and Teaching English as Second Language (TESL), the writer of this dissertation first organized a survey about the problem of confusing expressions in intermediate-level English majors' vocabulary acquisition. After collecting and analysing the data from the survey, the main causes of as shown in a survey a. A new vocabulary teaching method named Associating-syntagmatically-contrasting Method was put forward on the basis of Input Hypodissertation, the Theory of Information Processing and the Theory of Context.and testified through teaching experiments to be a vocabulary teaching method rather practical to Chinese teachers of English, applicable to more confusing expressions and more efficient in differentiating confusing expressions.
