Erhu teaching practice has an important position in China’s folk instrumental teaching. It has been nearly a century for modern Erhu professional teaching practice since Mr. Liu Tianhua initiated it.Professor Song Fei, one of the most influential professional Erhu performers and educators in the new era, has gradually formed her own Erhu teaching method with distinctive features. Her teaching method does not only embodies profound tradition, but also focuses on enlightening the students’ interpretation. Professor Song Fei has made great efforts in motivating the potential of each student, helping them reach their inner worlds mentally and emotionally. She guides students to master the language to express a variety of music, encourages them to think freely and to focus on constructing her unique aesthetic of Erhu music. With her guidance, students’ abilities of associating, recollecting and imagining are thoroughly evoked which are crucial to motivating their mental activities. Due to her significantly innovative idea in Erhu teaching practice, Song Fei’s Erhu teaching theories are more recognized as a kind of "art."This paper has three chapters. The first chapter demonstrates the development and the teaching methods of associating, recollecting and imagining. The following chapters I first discuss the embodiment of "bilingual" teaching practice of Song Fei, and then I examine the mind training and self‐discovery that are championed in her inspiring teaching mode which finally constructs the framework of her systematic teaching theory. In the respective illustration of this these chapters, my discussion is thoroughly centered on the practical teaching approaches and experiences, which details the entire structure of Song Fei’s inspirational Erhu teaching.
