In recent years, the overall reform of college English curriculum propels deep studies on the curriculum system of college English. College English Education is not only a research field of linguistics, but has a closer relationship with pedagogy as well. We should analyze it comprehensively combined with the higher educational goals. General education is currently the main direction of the overall reform of higher education, aiming at cultivating the"all-round developed people"to meet the social requirements. General education is both a philosophy and a model of curriculum implementation which can provide theoretical guidance for the curriculum provision of specific disciplines.Under the perspective of general education, this thesis gives a study of the present college English curriculum in order to explore the college English curriculum embodying the philosophy of general education. The author reviews the development of college English curriculum in PRC, defines the connotation of general education, summarizes the general education curriculum in USA, Hong Kong and Taiwan, and analyzes the relationship between college English and general education. Next, the author conducts the survey on the English curricular system of twenty-two universities in China and analyzes the curriculum contents and features in the primary phase and advanced phase of college English education. Based on the theory of general education, this thesis applies the"three chariots"theory to analyze the current curricular system and discusses some existing problems and the corresponding reasons. Based on the investigation of the practice of the two college English courses embodying the idea of general education, it analyzes the necessity and feasibility of implementing general education in college English curriculum.Based on the reflection of general education curriculum in the previous surveys and analysis, this thesis tries to design a framework of college English curricular system that embodies the philosophy of general education and puts forward some corresponding suggestions for application so as to provide references for the reform of college English curriculum.
